BUILT-IN, Chapter 2
Organized by Nicolas Grenier, Built-In: Chapter 2 brings together works that examine the metaphysical implications of highly organized and codified architecture, from the mundane materiality of a home to the extraordinary logistics of a closed-system.
Julia Tcharfas and Tim Ivison will present Experimental Life: Performance and Complexity in Biosphere 2, a lecture that focuses on two important and largely overlooked aspects of the Biosphere 2 experiment: performance and complexity. The program will also include four videos. Hunter Shaw’s work Prelude, a meditation on the cyclical nature of time, juxtaposes fragments of the infrastructure of a commercial building with a demonstration of the most primal instincts of territoriality. Oceanfront Manhunt, by Yelena Zhelezov, re-interprets the vernacular of ready-made real estate through a virtual exploration of a Malibu beach house. Max Cleary’s video Understanding Authentic Dwelling uses the language of motivational self-help writing to consider and question the role of buildings as active characters in our collective narrative. Lastly, Ben Tong and Alice Wang propose another perspective on Biosphere 2 with Oracle, which offers a record of the elements and forces that define the relationship between the planet, humans, and technology.
