WYD?(Out There)

On Sunday May 10, join us on Zoom for WYD?, an intimate and informal monthly gathering where members of the extended NAVEL community come together to present, test, perform, share, screen and talk about their work, practice, thoughts and current research topics.

Organized and curated by the artist and Collective Resident Nina Sarnelle, WYD?(Out There) is a twist on our regular WYD? event, which usually takes place at our space in LA. Without the ability to gather in person, we are taking the opportunity to invite artists, who are not based in LA, to present about their work to the NAVEL community. For this first round, presenters include Felix Kalmenson, Steve Gurysh and Misael Soto. WYD image

___ ![felix kalmenson](fromthebodyispent-2.jpg) **Felix Kalmenson** (b. 1987, St Petersburg, Russia) is an artist and filmmaker whose practice navigates installation, video and performance. Kalmenson’s work variably narrates the liminal space of a researcher’s and artist’s encounter with landscape and archive. By bearing witness to everyday life, and hardening the more fragile vestiges of private and collective histories through their work, Kalmenson gives themselves away to the cadence of a poem, always in flux. Steve Gurysh Steve Gurysh is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice reimagines environmental contexts. His work is often made in correspondence with scientists, engineers, other artists, and non-human participants. He is currently an Adjunct Professor and Sculpture Technician in the School of Art at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA.

Misael Soto Born in Puerto Rico (1986) and based in Miami, Misael Soto’s practice interrogates and subverts contextually associated everyday objects and systemic roles, disrupting and manipulating space, systems, and frameworks. The time-based and ephemeral work involves interventions made upon existing objects, performative activations, institutional mediations, and is, more often than not, a combination of these elements. Beyond their public artworks which they have shown extensively for many years, Misael has exhibited at MCA Chicago, Open Engagement 2015, the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami, Material Art Fair in Mexico City, and David Castillo Gallery in Miami, amongst others. Misael is currently the Art in Public Life Resident with the City of Miami Beach and Oolite Arts.
